Pandemonium Con was a Shadowhunters convention held December 9-10, 2018, in London, England. It was attended by cast members Kat McNamara, Matthew Daddario, Isaiah Mustafa, Will Tudor, Dom Sherwood, and Jade Hassouné. Here are some of the highlights from the convention!
We began the weekend with the welcoming party. In attendance were Matt, Dom, Will, and Isaiah, all seemingly in high spirits as they played Jenga and various guessing games with fans.
Amid all the autographs and photos, Isaiah had the first panel of the weekend. He talked a little about IT 2, but this being a Shadowhunters convention, talk was mainly of Luke Garroway. He loved working with Nicola Correia-Damude and promised development with his “friendship” (yes, he said to put it in quotation marks) with Maryse Lightwood. His most challenging scene was his flashback scene meeting Maia Roberts, in episode 2×06. This was the first scene he had working with Alisha Wainwright and now, they live on the same street! He says that he sees her as a little sister and had nothing but compliments for her.
Will took the stage afterward, with a special guest – Kat! She came in with Will, having a free day, and sat at the side to watch. He says that he enjoyed playing Jonathan Morgenstern more than Sebastian Verlac and that while he prefers playing villains to good guys, playing Jonathan was an exercise in both that he enjoyed.
Dom and Matt came next with the first duo panel. Matt had an interesting quote for us: “My memory only goes back two weeks ‘cause, you know, fish never look unhappy.”
What animal, real or mythical, would they be? Matt, after confirming that mythical animals were allowed, didn’t skip a beat as he launched into a description of an interplanetary octopus, 8 million miles long, made of gold and diamonds. He’d have a thousand eyes, each with a universe inside where he exists again, and only eats strawberry gelato.
Dom? “I would be a puppy.”
The pair were also asked whether they could remember the Parabatai Oath from episode 2×03 “Parabatai Lost.” Matt deflected from the fact that, no, he didn’t, by talking about the origin of the Oath and how it was adapted from a Bible verse, Ruth 1:16-17. Dom, for his part, gave it a good shot and remembered most of it. If they could have any weapons in the show? It would be a “Shadowtank.” Or a hot air balloon from which they’d throw rocks over the side.
Jade played us some of his music during his Sunday panel. His EP, Love Letter to a Fandom, is set to release in February. He also shared with us that while he adores all of his fellow cast, he’s particularly close with Alberto Rosende and Dom and that his favorite Meliorn scenes are alongside Jace Herondale.
Dom shared an interesting trait he developed for Jace; he trained himself to absentmindedly fidget with his stele during scenes, as a nod to the books, and that’s why he broke so many of them. He considers Jace and Simon Lewis his favorite BROTP since Jace and Alec Lightwood don’t count as a BROTP as they’re Parabatai. Dom also shared that Season 1 was filmed in a “gross, cold warehouse,” not a studio. It was these adverse conditions that joined everyone together and made them a family.
To borrow a fandom phrase to describe Matthew Daddario, ugh, his mind. Power-washing, Alec and Magnus’ eight accidental children in Season 3, polar bears picking off crew members, shipping Raj with a “really cute” demon… Matt was on top form the whole weekend. We particularly liked – when asked if Alec from the alternate universe (1×10, “This World Inverted”) knew about Magnus being a warlock – his rant about how there are only two versions of Alec: the regular Alec we all know and love, and the AU Alec that exists in every other universe, has infinite knowledge, and therefore already knew about Magnus. So there you have it folks; AU Alec isn’t just a party planner, he’s also a multi-universe god-monster.
If you thought Shadowhunter names were tough to keep original, think again! Jade and Isaiah teamed up to rename every fan who asked a question, and give them a family backstory, too – Canton Sparkhammer, Sterling Steelfeather, and Ramathorn Raintree all left the mic happy, we think. They say the best part about playing a Downworlder is that they’re like outlaws – seen as bad guys, but actually good – and they’re also “the coolest,” especially because of Magnus Bane!
What if Clary Fairchild had never found out she was a Shadowhunter? Kat’s given it some thought. She says that Clary would be happy, she’d be an artist, probably in a relationship with Simon, but there’d always be some part of her missing. If Kat could create her own rune, she’d call it the “Mary Poppins” rune and it would just do all those little chores around the house that you never get time to do. Sign us up!
Matt joined Kat on stage for their duo and the last panel of the weekend. When asked if Clary and Alec could ever be Parabatai, Matt’s answer was an immediate, strong “No!” The pair says that both Clary and Alec are too stubborn, and would butt heads, or kill each other. They were also asked if the two characters have many interactions in Season 3B; Matt says that Clary and Alec start an international competition to sew the longest thread into a hat for a bear. They didn’t do very well with it apparently.
Overall, this weekend was a wonderful reminder about how charming, talented, and dedicated the Shadowhunters cast is! You can see more of our coverage and pics here. And keep an eye out for our upcoming HQ image gallery from Pandemonium Con!
