We are continuing our #31DaysOfHalloween with Vampire Week! There is clearly something alluring about tragic immortals who prey on the living. Given that they have fascinated the world for centuries, there’s no shortage of vampire-themed entertainment to choose from. From sparkly to gothic to hilarious, we’ve selected a few choice movies for you to sink your teeth into.
Interview with the Vampire (1994)
Synopsis: A vampire tells his epic life story: love, betrayal, loneliness, and hunger.
Why it’s good: This vampire classic has absolutely everything: southern gothic vampire husbands and their homicidal offspring, a child vampire who could eat Renesmee Cullen as a mid-day snack, vampires pretending to be humans pretending to be vampires… What more could a vampire-lover want?
Where to watch it: YouTube, Amazon, GooglePlay, Vudu, iTunes, Netflix, Cinemax
Only Lovers Left Alive (2013)
Synopsis: A depressed musician reunites with his lover, but their romance, which has already endured several centuries, is disrupted by the arrival of her uncontrollable younger sister.
Why it’s good: If you’ve ever sat on a long bus ride home from school listening to My Chemical Romance and daydreaming, here it is visualized. Featuring Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton as goth rock vampire lovers, it is literally a dream come true for every eyeliner-wearing middle-schooler, and it’s a beauty of a film, too.
Where to watch it: GooglePlay, Vudu, iTunes, Amazon
What We Do in the Shadows (2014)
Synopsis: Viago, Deacon, and Vladislav are vampires who find that modern life has them struggling with mundane things such as paying rent, keeping up with chores, and overcoming flatmate conflicts.
Why it’s good: Lauded by many members of this site’s staff as the greatest film ever made, this movie is, at the very least, the definition of a mockumentary. Featuring: putting down some newspaper before eating someone, not eating Stu, and Taika Waititi probably just going on about his day as usual.
Where to watch it: YouTube, GooglePlay, Vudu, iTunes, Amazon
Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)
Synopsis: Centuries-old vampire Count Dracula comes to England to seduce his barrister’s fiancée, Mina Murray, and wreak havoc in the foreign land.
Why it’s good: The granddaddy of vampires is played by the ever-masterful Gary Oldman, who can pull off both creepy, crinkly, bad-hair-day Dracula and devastatingly sexy, “please chew on my neck” Dracula. Also featuring baby Winona Ryder and baby Keanu Reeves.
Where to watch it: YouTube, Amazon, GooglePlay, Vudu
Twilight (2008)
Synopsis: Bella Swan moves to Forks and encounters Edward Cullen, a gorgeous boy with a secret.
Why it’s good: Love it or hate it, deep down you adore this movie. It defined a generation. It was the entire zeitgeist of our world for half a decade. And, yes, it introduced us all to many life-changing concepts, such as sparkling vampires, telepathic werewolves, and “imprinting” (biology teachers everywhere are shuddering).
Where to watch it: Vudu, iTunes, Amazon, YouTube, Google Play
